The
LAWMAN 1000
was conceived in the summer of 1984.
It's original purpose was to raise money to help a King County Sheriff
radio dispatcher who was found to have M.S. That first ride in late
September was a very chilly ride and there may even have been early snow
in the mountains and that means rain in the lowlands. The ride went to
the Tri-Cities and unlike our current rides there was no dinner waiting
for the riders until their return to the western side of the mountains
the following day.
It wasn't long before the founders started publicizing the event and
it really blossomed. There have been as many as 1900 rider/passengers
and the event was moved to the fourth weekend in June each year. In
November 1987, Governor Booth Gardner proclaimed the fourth weekend in
June as
LAWMAN 1000
weekend.
In the early days there were not as many fund raisers as there are now
and not as many rider groups as there are now either. That is both a
good thing and a bad thing. The good is that we can take the ride places
that 1900 riders would never be able to go because the facilities won't
hold that many. The bad news is we don't raise the hundreds of thousands
of dollars that were raised in the early days. Still the
LAWMAN 1000 has many
loyal riders and for a ride that is put together by unpaid volunteers it
is still THE premier ride in the Pacific Northwest.
The
LAWMAN 1000 riders have raised a lot of money for Northwest charities over
the years. You can get an idea of their success by scanning the list of
rides below. Empty slots means information is not
available.
